About the Institute

The Ibn Sina Institute of Tibb was established as a Public Benefit Organisation in 1997 to promote the practice and training of Tibb in South Africa. Founded by Prof.Rashid Bhikha, who dedicated his lifetime towards health upliftment, the Institute has worked tirelessly towards provision of responsible, individual centred health provision through the principles of Tibb.

Also known as Unani-Tibb, which translates as Greco-Arab medicine, Bibb was the mainstay of medicine until the late 19th Century. Its philosophy is an assimilation of the thoughts of Hippocrates the ‘father’ of Western medicine, Galen and Ibn Sina who defined and refined the temperamental and humoral theory into a system of evidence-based medicine.Tibb enjoys all the benefits of being tested for well over 5000 years. It is practiced throughout the world, often known by names adapted to the region; Persian medicine(Iran), Anatolian medicine(Turkey), Unani medicine(Indian sub-continent), Uyghur medicine(China), Islamic/Prophetic medicine, as well as Western/European herbal medicine.

What sets Tibb apart is that it recognises more than the symptoms of illness conditions but also addresses their underlying causes. Tibb considers all factors that may be affecting a person, encouraging self-empowerment whilst providing an individualised approach to healthcare. It is perfectly placed for providing health solutions for South African  because it shares common ground with both Western and Conventional medicine and African Traditional medicine.
